Know Your Mark

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

We are all multifaceted creatures, don’t get me wrong. But stereotypes are useful for a reason.

In the dating world it’s important to know your mark and know when (stereotypically speaking) you and your date are not meant to be.

I once went on a date with a very attractive man who I knew nothing about. He suggested drinks at one of my favorite bars, so I knew his taste wasn’t completely off.

A collection of Hawaiian shirts graced the gritty bar walls. They fluttered and flapped each time a breeze blew through.  Hung as art work, they turned and twisted in the Indian summer, showing off each hibiscus or sail boat.

Even in jeans I was overdressed. I should have left off most (or all) of the make up and traded the heels for ballet flats. In my denim and “fancy” tee with lipstick on and eyelashes a-flutter, I looked worlds different from my date. He rode his bike there in those khaki shorts and was still wearing cycling cleats.  His backpack slung over the chair behind him, the camelback peeking out of the top.

I felt a little out of place.

So I ordered another whiskey and started the conversation. And you know? Mr. Outdoor Enthusiast and Miss I’ve-Never-Been-To-The-Gym got along just fine.

I just should have worn hiking boots…
